  Mr ZHANG Xuewu, Chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association Hosted by Mr ZHANG Xuewu, Chairman of The Hong Kong Chinese Enterprises Association, this Panel Discussion aimed to explore how SMEs could attain business success by practising integrity. "Business success" does not refer to pecuniary wealth only; it also embraces good business reputation and brand image, as well as a corruption-free business environment. In this session, entrepreneurs from Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao were invited to share with participants their practical experience in integrity management and cross-boundary operation.

"The culture of an enterprise is built and founded on many stories. An enterprise, during its development, surely would come across many real-life stories, big and small, about how integrity challenges have been managed. These stories would become the ground to implant a culture of integrity."

  Dr SZETO deemed it necessary for enterprises to build a culture of ethical governance in order to attain success in business. He also cited his own experience to elucidate ways in which SMEs could build up good business reputation through a culture of ethical governance.

"Let me take the construction industry as an example. If we still run our business by 'patting somebody on the shoulder' or 'offering gifts', the enterprise would never keep up with the current development trend and will be marginalized eventually...Only by enhancing corporate governance, enterprises could strengthen their competitive advantage."

  In his speech, Mr MAK shared with participants the characteristics of Macao's economy. Using construction industry as an example, he also shared his views on how to enhance the governance of Macao enterprises to capture business opportunities.

  Ms CHENG analysed the cause of integrity deficiency nowadays and its ensuing damages. She also shared with participants ways to build an international brand for the company with integrity as the foundation and professionalism as the course of action.

"Enterprises should sign an agreement with suppliers and contractors on their co-operative relationship to ensure that neither party will offer or accept bribes. Corruption will cause a rise in product cost, and in turn the selling price. If the set price is too high to be accepted by the market, the product will be a failure."

  Dr CHAN shared with participants the challenges faced by companies in the course of development as well as ways to strengthen internal control and build a brand of integrity. Dr CHAN also provided operational tips to enterprises seeking an expansion of domestic sale in the Mainland market.

  Open Forum (afternoon session)  
     
  Participants raised questions enthusiastically in response to speeches delivered by guests during the two afternoon panel discussions. Apart from extensive exchanges on problems relating to cross-boundary operation, participants also seized the valuable opportunity to seek professional advices on subjects like legal service, accounting and customs matters etc. They were particularly interested in the successful experience of entrepreneurs of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao and had heated discussions on areas such as how enterprises could adhere to integrity in face of corruption temptations; how to effectively implement integrity management with limited resources, and how to strike a balance between performance and integrity, etc.
