Ka-ming:          (to the phone) Hello, Mr. Chan. It’s Ming calling. I wonder if you’re interested in the high return investment plan that we discussed last time. Why don’t you visit our office to discuss it?... Pardon... No time... Not interested... Hello, Mr. Chan? Mr. Chan...

Ben:                   What? Did you fail again?

Ka-ming:          (sighs) I won’t meet the monthly quota again.

Ben:                   My situation isn’t much better... Let’s just work hard!

(Ben leaves. Ka-ming looks at the database he has in hand, trying to find the right targets.)

Ka-ming:          (VO) My name is Ng Ka-ming. I’m a customer relations officer of a bank. In this line of work, we’re under constant pressure to meet certain sales quota by the end of each month. My performance this month is not up to par. It doesn’t even meet the minimum requirement.

Mr. Wong:      (to the phone) I’ve already purchased several plans from you. I’ll pass this time but I have a wealthy overseas client who just arrived in Hong Kong to start a company. Are you interested in meeting him?

Ka-ming:          (to the phone) Yes, of course!

Scene 3

Time:                  Day

Location:           Bank

Character(s):   Ka-ming, Fernando

(Ka-ming tries to sell the bank’s investment products to Fernando.)

Ka-ming:           After hearing so much about this short-term endowment plan, do you have any questions or comments?

Fernando:     Well! I’ll buy this insurance plan from you. Will $500,000 be enough?

Ka-ming:           $500,000? Of course it’s enough!

Fernando:     But I have a problem. I wonder if your bank will be able to help me.

Ka-ming:           What is it?

Fernando:     I want to transfer about USD 5 million from my home country to Hong Kong. I’ve talked with several banks already, and they all want to first verify the source of the funds.

Ka-ming:           Oh... Your home country...

(INSERT: In Ka-ming’s imagination, Fernando is a drug lord.)

Fernando:     If you promise to help me transfer my money to Hong Kong, I can pay for the insurance policy with cash, immediately.

Ka-ming:           Immediately?

Fernando:     Yes. But I must leave Hong Kong tomorrow and I’ll be away for several weeks. Just prepare all the documents and I’ll authorize you to sign for me.

Ka-ming:           You want me to sign on your behalf? Bad!

(INSERT: As Ka-ming’s wonders about Fernando’s suggestion, the bank’s Code of conduct and Guideline on Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing issued by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority flash into his mind.)
